Each month, we introduce and discuss a new monthly. The theme is spoken about during morning assembly and our students also complete a culminating activity related to the themes on a monthly basis.
The theme for the month of November is Peace.
“O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.” – Maidah:8
In the pure lexical definition of the word, “Islam” translates as peace. A religion that, when adhered to properly on the path of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the Ahlul Bayt (as), results in both an esoteric, innate instance of peace and an exoteric, communal instance of peace. Within its tenets, Islam lays out a comprehensive balance between achieving a balanced, peaceful, personal life with a tolerant, forbearant society of co-existence and respect.
Historically, the Holy Prophet (saw) governed in Medina with non-Muslims as a peace-loving government. It was only when defiance of law and intolerant behaviour occurred that conflict would ensue, otherwise there were those non-Muslims who lived comfortably and securely within Arabia. For example, after the event of Mubahala, the Prophet (saw) offered security to the Christians of Yemen as part of a treaty showing everyone that the Messenger of God was an advocate of peace.
In today’s climate, we need to be reminded of these timeless societal values.
